The Perils of Work

2005-06-18 at 11:43 p.m.

Sheesh, I meant to update a long time ago, just to let anyone who reads this aside from myself know that I've not been kidnapped by any rich-old-men-with-one-lung customers and whisked off to live a life of luxury (it might happen...you never know).

I've had a strange week. Every single shift save one I've been working with one guy, which has been rather odd. Though on the plus side I now get on rather well with him, but it would have been unfortunate if I had hated him or something. I am now somewhat better on the bar, though I don't think I'll ever be a great barman. I'm sore all over from lifting heavy things though I'm hoping this presages the development of actual muscles as that would be a nice change.

On Thursday I had to go to the university to fill out a criminal records check form thing, even though I seem to recall already giving them permission to search my record (which I don't have). Anyway this mostly involved telling them where I used to live. Kerry wasn't there as she's gone to Poland but I recognised someone else from the Birkbeck course. Typical, I sit for half a year in the same classes as the girl and only now discover she's going to the same university to do the same subject as me. Her name is Katarzyna and...guess what? she's Polish too. Everyone I meet now seems to be Polish, its strange. Though maybe not that odd as Jacek (my supervisor) said that his entire street are all living in London now so an awful lot of Polish people must have migrated at the same time.

I seem to be losing my grip on the English language. I think its because everyone else is speaking broken English so I've started joining in (a form of solidarity perhaps?) which is not helped by being asked by quite a few of the people I work with for the "correct" ways to say things - I can never remember the properly grammatical phrasings!

I went to the pub quiz on Monday and sat with the crowd of habitual drunks who I seem to have fallen in with. I met them a couple of times during the week as well. We won a bottle of wine, which was nice. I have Monday off this week so I'm going again. This by the way explains the scarcity of entries here - I'm always either working or sitting in the pub!

It has been entirely too hot this weekend, and I have to work tomorrow morning. I hope it cools down a bit or I will be sweating away - and that is not an attractive thing to have in your waitress. I also hope no one wants their breakfast tomorrow as, as I recall, its only me and Jacek on and the last time that happened he had to go do the room services and I got into a bit of a panic. I also need to check out what happens next Sunday as for some reason I seem to be the only person working in the evening and that could be a little difficult really.

I bought myself a Metallica album (I need loud, fast music to wake me up in the mornings) and I'm considering buying a Dropkick Murphy's album after listening to "Which Side Are You On" which was rather good.

I'm enjoying spending my money and even enjoying working at the hotel. I don't like the heat and one person I work with (who I've had to complain about as he was skiving off the last time I worked with him and made me do his job as well as his own, which really wasn't on). But otherwise everything has been good. Although our manager is evidently very new to it all, as on Monday we had a staff meeting where we played "criticise your colleagues' dress sense" with our uniforms (someone - I have my suspicions as to whom - said I should tuck my shirt in. Frankly, fat as I am, this is not a good idea), which was not really much of a morale booster. Otherwise everything is fine, I'm being paid on time (Ravi said that he hadn't been paid when he should so evidently I should check on it to make sure I am being paid every Friday like I should).

Other than that lots of things have happened really, but I can't recall them and I am too hot. I should try to update more regularly, I know, because I've forgotten things, but I'm always working. Still the money is nice and I finish tomorrow at midday and have the following day off! Woo!

Till later.
