Too Little Cheerfulness

2005-02-06 at 10:37 p.m.

Gah, feeling rather depressed, for no very good reason. I'm not sure whether this heralds a return of illness or is just a normal thing. Will wait and see I think.

I got a reply from City University saying that I had not been accepted - they sounded a wee bit miffed. I think perhaps someone overheard me being a bit scathing about them - because I do not care, as I have accepted the offer from South Bank.

Next week I'm off to a job agency to see whether they will get me some work and I have to fill out some forms sometime soon for them.

Today we had dad's birthday thing. His birthday was actually yesterday but he and mum had to go out to dinner with a friend of his (whose wife apparently talked to my mother about support stockings half the night). So today we went to a pub for lunch. Which was okay. We were meaning to go to Southwark Cathedral but as I could not wake up at a reasonable hour, this never happened.

Afterwards I went off to the hotel for a little drink, and witnessed a couple playfighting in the middle of the lounge, for no apparent reason. People are very strange.

Aside from all this, life is rather boring. But isn't that always the way?

Fantasy
Gerard de Nerval

There is a tune for which I would give all
Rossini, all of Weber and Mozart,
an old tune, languid and funereal,
that charms me only with its secret art.

Now every time I happen to hear it sung,
my soul grows younger by two centuries:
it's the reign of Louis Treize...and I think I see
a green hill yellowed by the setting sun;

then an old brick chateau with stone corners,
and the leaded glass of the windows, colour of rose,
begirt by great parks, where a river flows,
bathing the stones as it glides among the flowers;

then a lady, at the tall window of her chamber,
a blonde with dark eyes, in an old-time gown...
whom I have seen before, perhaps, and known
in another existence - and whom I remember!
