And The Band Played...

2004-12-16 at 8:11 p.m.

Well, I am now listening to Fred Astaire and in a rather mellow mood.

In fact, this has been a good week altogether. On Tuesday I had a very good chat with the people in my unemployment group thing - which surprised me a little as I have not a thing in common with them, and they generally speak to one another in Bengali. If I play my cards right I could learn to insult people in a foreign language! I did not, however, find any jobs. Ha.

Then I had a biology practical involving blowing into water-with-stuff-in-it and then running up and down stairs and blowing again. I was not good at this, and got aberrant results because I could not breathe after the running. Which was a bit embarassing, I am far too unfit.

Afterwards I got the Seasons 3&4 of Allo Allo from HMV (we finished early, I spent money I did not have, but I wanted it very much). Also a CD of music from the 30s and a Dubliners CD for my mother.

Yesterday was fairly boring, we started a new topic in physics but it was the last day of term so I was not paying all that much attention. Afterwards, got myself a CD of some country band I am too embarassed to name - though I should point out in my defence that I was actually looking for a Marlene Dietrich CD but could not find one.

So now I have a nice collection of music and things to watch, and I have a holiday from studying. (And an exam in January I am trying not to think about).

I've also been more or less able to organise some work shadowing, one in a private clinic in Harley Street (ooh-er) and the other in one of the hospitals in Northumberland. My task for tomorrow is arranging dates for these visits and then arranging to go up to Edinburgh at some point to see my friends over the holidays. We're heading north on Tuesday after I've been to Employment Solutions again. They've basically said it doesn't matter if I don't come back for a while after they reopen, which is good as I'm intending to stay up north until the 9th or so.

I do actually have some concerns about that place which I will no doubt rant about ad infinitum at some point, but just at the moment I need to read up about radiography in preparation for this work experience. Also I want to watch my DVDs again.

But before I go, and carrying on from the previous entry, here is an old music hall song which is still rather appropriate despite being a bit ancient:

Two Lovely Black Eyes
Charles Coburn

Strolling so happy down Bethnal Green
This gay youth you might have seen,
Tompkins and I, with his girl between,
Oh! what a surprise!
I prais'd the Conservatives frank and free,
Tompkins got angry so speedilee,
All in a moment he handed to me,
Two lovely black eyes!

Next time, I argued I thought it best,
To give the conservative side a rest.
The merits of Glad-stone I freely pressed, When
Oh! what a surprise!
The chap I had met was a Tory true,
Nothing the Liberals right could do,
This was my share of that argument too,
Two lovely black eyes!

The moral you've caught I can hardly doubt
Never on politics rave and shout,
Leave it to others to fight it out, if
You would be wise
Better, far better, it is to let,
Lib'rals and Tories alone, you bet,
Unless you're willing and anxious to get,
Two lovely black eyes!

CHORUS:
Two lovely black eyes!
Oh! what a surprise!
Only for telling a man he was wrong,
Two lovely black eyes!
