Wonderful Job...and politics

2004-07-06 at 12:48 a.m.

I have just seen an utterly perfect job. Based in Edinburgh, to be an Information Officer for an MSP.

I want more than anything to get back to Edinburgh. I am a terrible communicator, I never ring my friends, if I can't text or email them, I rarely get in touch. I think about them, all the time, but I never get in touch. I don't like speaking on the phone much. I want to go back to Edinburgh, hang out in the Judge, lose at the pub quiz, laugh at the freshers, hear the accents again, half kill myself stumbling up hills and falling over on the cobbles in the winter...I want to go back. Edinburgh feels like home now, even more than Newcastle does. OK I was born in Newcastle, but I led a hell of a sheltered life and then lived in the backend of nowhere for years, and never got to explore where I'm from properly. But in Edinburgh, at university, I explored the town, I had friends, I know people and I know every inch of the streets of the town itself. So my latter year there, and second year, were pretty awful, but I still love the place, and all my friends are there. Here in London, I know no one, I see no one, I like having my friends around me, I might have been depressed up there but at least I was not lonely.

Anyway, back to the job. I know the MSP, her brother worked for my university. I've met her a couple of times. She seems nice, all accounts of her say she is nice. I know about the Scottish Parliament, I may be English but I do know about it. I've worked for the Party before, and they liked me. I know how to write a press release, I enjoy research. I can do this job.

I can go back to where I want to be, do a job I both can do and would enjoy doing, and the pay is good. The perfect job, in other words.

The only trouble is that every Party member in Scotland will be after that job, and half of them will know the MSP well. So why would she pick someone English when she can have a Scot? My skills are not that advanced, I can't demonstrate that I am better all that well and I bet that creep Chris will get it. He was someone I met through my university. Creepy guy, rather obsessed with his 'connections' (amusing really, mine were considerably better than his...lol). He is, really, the sort of guy who always does get employed by MPs and MSPs and is the very last person who should do so. You can spot someone who is obsessed with their own advancement a mile off, a sychophant who will reassure their politician that they are doing just great even as they slide down the polls; leak like a sieve to the press if they think it might help them, then stab you in the back to get themselves a position. I just hope this particular MSP can spot that too, because the Party, being in power as it is, is full of people like that. Plenty decent people too, of course, people who are ambitious but not the sort who come flocking to whoever happens to be in power only to bugger off come election defeats.

Anyway, I'll apply for the position regardless, because I can do it, and I would like to. Hopefully my application will actually reflect that and I will at least get an interview. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, got to go, am getting up at an ungodly hour tomorrow to do a practise run to Wandsworth (damn me and being polite...why did I agree to an interview at 10am!!!!)
