Books I'd Recommend

2004-02-28 at 6:36 a.m.

I woke up at six am today and I can't get back to sleep. So, I'm online and I have nothing to do lol. So this is for Kirsty, who asked for some books I'd recommend.

First author I'd recommend would be H P Lovecraft. He wrote these sort of gothic horror stories that are not very scary but are really interesting. Whats more, you can read his stuff online at http://www.hplovecraft.com/ to see whether you like it first.

Secondly, if you're already reading Wuthering Heights you've probably already read it, but Jane Eyre is actually really good. The stuff by Anne Bronte isn't as good, though I'd check out Emily's poems too. There is an ancient biography of them called Haworth Parsonage which if you ever see it anywhere, is a good read, too.

I'd also check out Paul Docherty, who writes these murder mysteries set in ancient Egypt and in mediaeval England. He also wrote a really, really good book called The Rose Demon about this demon called Rosifer, who tended the rose gardens of God, and a boy. Definitely a good read.

I don't know whether you like fantasy books, but I do, so I recommend David Eddings. I liked the Belgariad series and the second one with Sparhawk in it which I've forgotten what its called. They're good, and funny too.

I'd also recommend Alexander McCall Smith's series about an African lady detective, The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Tears of the Giraffe and Morality for Beautiful Girls.

One of my favourite books is Rudyard Kipling's Kim, about an Anglo-Indian boy and spying during the Raj. I am sure its probably a bit inaccurate about India, but it is a good read nevertheless. As is H Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines actually.

I like Agatha Christie myself, too, but only her books with either Poirot or Miss Marple in them.

If you like real-life things then I like Antonia Fraser's historical books, usually about different women.

I even quite like books about feminism, such as The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan and Who Stole Feminism: How Women Have Betrayed Women by Christina Hoff Sommers.

The best author of all is (excluding Tolkien) Diana Wynne Jones. She writes children's and adults fantasy books. Actually you can read the children's books as an adult and still enjoy them, like Fire and Hemlock, which is a sort of retelling of the myths of Tam Lin and True Thomas. She is definitely worth checking out.

Ummm, not sure what else to recommend. I think thats plenty to be going on with though!
